TOPONIMIAS DE ATAPUERCA I

laturrumbera

El término municipal de Atapuerca alberga en sus 25 Km2 mucha historia y prehistoria como ya sabreis. Pero además en el nombre de sus pagos o toponimias hay muchas pistas. Os describiré alguna de ellas:

Fin de Rey, también llamado Piedrahita o campo de matanza.  Se denomina así porque existe un menhir al cual los entendidos lo datan en mas de 5.000 años y además desde mitad del siglo pasado alguien grabó en él la siguiente inscripción :

“Fin de Rey – D. García de Navarra –

Batalla de Atapuerca – Año 1,.054”

esta leyenda alude a la famosa Batalla de Atapuerca que enfrentó en el año 1.054 al rey de León y Conde de Castilla , D. Fernando I  con su hermano, el Rey D. García de Navarra. En esta batalla murió el D. García, de ahí el nombre del pago, que dice la leyenda que su cuerpo fue expuesto durante días en el vecino  pueblo de Agés y que luego fue enterrado en el panteón real del Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera.

El pueblo de Atapuerca representa esta batalla en el penúltimo domingo del mes de Agosto en los campos de la ladera de la Iglesia y que es seguida todos los años por miles de personas.
